chef diego's lord of the wings
A lot of new restaurants have been popping up along
Maginhawa Street in Quezon City, but Mike and I tend to stick to our usual
spots whenever we’re in the area: mainly Tomato Kick and Crazy Katsu, plus Pino
and Uncle Moe’s in nearby Malingap St. I’ve been wanting to try out some of the
new places and so last weekend, we ate at Chef Diego’s Lord of the Wings.
Lord of the Wings is one of the latest additions to the list
of restaurants specializing in chicken wings (the dish has been enjoying
immense popularity the past couple of years, in the same level as milk teas and
yogurt).
Chef Diego is former actor Diego Castro of TGIS fame. After
leaving showbiz, he studied culinary arts and became a chef. I actually got to
work with him before, when I hosted Lady’s Choice Mayonnaise’s series of mall
shows, which had him whipping up dishes in a cooking demo. But I doubt he still
remembers that hehe.
Anyways. The place has five flavors for the wings and we tried two: Honey
Barbecue and Garlic Parmesan. The honey barbecue wings were good - not
outstanding, but it still works. The garlic parmesan was really flavorful, but
it was a little on the dry side. At first I was glad that it wasn’t so oily, as
garlic parmesan wings tend to be in other restos; but then I realized that the
wings would’ve been better it they were a little juicier.
We also had Fried Mozzarella Balls, which Mike and I both
liked.
The utensils were cute but a little hard to use if you're trying to twirl pasta onto it.
And that matters because what really stood out for us was the Summer Pasta, an
oil-based pasta dish with spaghetti noodles, cream dory fish, and basil leaves.
It was so good! It was full of flavor, with just the right amount ot saltiness.
There was a generous serving of dory, all of which were perfectly crispy on the
outside and moist on the inside. From the serving to the flavors, to the
budget-friendly price, we highly recommend this dish.
Like many restaurants along Maginhawa Street, Lord of the
Wings is a house with the front converted into an establishment. The interiors
were simple but fun. The tables are covered in collages, and the one that
caught my eye was the table with Chef Diego’s father who passed away last year
- veteran broadcast journalist Angelo Castro Jr. (commonly known as ACJ to
those of us in ABS-CBN). I thought it was a simple yet touching
tribute.
