hooked on the newsroom; missing the news
i've recently started watching the hbo series "the newsroom" and i must say i'm hooked.
jeff daniels is great as will mcavoy and the rest of the cast is just as awesome. that john gallagher is cute does not hurt either. hehe :) but my favorite character of them all would have to be charlie skinner. he may be the most senior in the team but he is still very sharp. charlie is played by sam waterston, who's acting as a man who's "seen it all" is perfect for the part; plus he's got an awesomely rough voice that adds character to his character :)
i have to admit though that i'm not really familiar with some of the topics they take up on the show as i do not know much about politics in the US. hurray for having mike nearby so i have someone to explain stuff to me when i get confused!
watching the show has made me miss doing the news. before i became a full-fledged dj, i was a newscaster who delivered the goods every hour, plus breaking news if there was any. people hardly tune in to an fm pop station to listen to the news, but that didn't make me care any less about what i said on-air. you don't mess up with the news.
oha! anong sinabi ng pensive pose ni will mcavoy sa pag-nganga ko? haha :)
so i don't look so serious... pero promise maayos talaga ko mag-handle ng balita noon! (ay may bangko, buhatin ko muna...) i was actually nominated twice in the golden dove awards for best radio newscaster, but i'd be up against top am radio anchors and it was quite impossible to actually win against them. or bitter ocampo lang ako. i think yun yon hahaha :)
some days were ho-hum, but most days, it was pretty exciting and nerve-wracking, lalo na kapag may breaking news. naka-tambay na lang ako lagi nun sa dzmm getting updates on whatever story was unfolding. and there were a lot of memorable ones in the ten years i was a newscaster - like people power 2 and 3, 9/11, pacquiao fights, and elections.
i remember when three filipina mountaineers climbed mount everest. everybody was scrambling to get updates live from those who were there at the site. i was going back and forth the dzmm and wrr booth because my co-dj martin d was pushing me to come up with something and it wasn't that easy. i managed to get hold of studio 23's vince rodriguez who was with the team. we put him on-air and he gave us live updates! nauna pa kami sa dzmm :D that was really exciting.
nakaka-miss din yung naka-tutok ka sa mga pangyayari. pero konting miss lang hahaha :) i'm not sure if i'm up for pursuing a career as a full-fledged news person, whether as an anchor, writer, producer, etc. or at the very least, maybe not in hard news.
hmmm... sabi ko na nga ba pang-showbiz ako e! paging mario dumaual... :P
